How to Use the Wheelchair Bearing Extractor: Correct Technique & Troubleshooting

Using a bearing extractor can make removing stubborn or old bearings much easier—when used correctly! Here’s a quick guide to help you get the best results and avoid common issues like flange twisting or prong spin.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Preparation

  • Apply a penetrating oil to the bearing area to help break up any corrosion. Let it sit for a few minutes.

Tool Setup

  1. Insert the prongs of the extractor into the bearing. Make sure the prongs are seated evenly and securely.
  2. Check that the flange (the wide part at the top) is flush and not at an angle.

Tightening

  • Use two wrenches:
    • One wrench holds the body of the tool by the flange (to keep it steady).
    • The second wrench tightens the nut.
    • People ask how tight. We tell them tighten until it is firmly tight and then 1/8 of a turn more. No more, the bolt is designed to brake if tighten to much to protect your wheelchair equipment.
  • Important: Always turn the nut, not the body. Turning the body can twist the flange (as shown in the left photo).

Extraction

  • Once tight, gently tap the extractor with a punch from the flat side of the nut. If the bearing doesn’t move, check for proper seating and reapply oil.
  • Tap gently, this is not time for Hulk.  If you force it out improperly you can damage your wheelchair equipment.

Troubleshooting: Flange Spin & Twisting

  • Twisted Flange (Left Photo):
    • Indicates the tool was at an angle or not held tightly enough. This can happen if you tighten using the body instead of the nut. (Tool used once)
  • Proper Use (Right Photo):
    • The flange remains straight with very little spin or angle when the tool is used correctly with two wrenches and proper seating. (tool used over 200 times)
